The single-family house on Bådehavnsgade is located in a dense, complex, industrial area next to the fishing port in Sydhavnen. The building is both a home for a family of five and a workshop. The design process involved a lot of dialogue with the owners, who had great sustainability ambitions and are also self-builders.

The building has solar panels on the roof, recirculating shower systems, greywater collection for use in the toilets and a three-story winter garden which provides passive ventilation. TOAST worked closely with Havnens Hænder, who supplied all the biogenic materials used in the construction, which has become a laboratory for their material catalog in Denmark. The wooden structure uses breathable hemp block insulation, is clad with clay panels on the inside, and has a cork facade on the outside.

This project was in the technical section of Arkitekten, was nominated for the Årets Arne 2022, and kickstarted TOAST’s focus on using sustainable, biogenic materials whenever possible.
