The brief from this client was to combine two small apartments to make space for a couple expecting their first child. Because the two stacked apartments were each only 52m2, it was important to use the space efficiently. The primary intervention involves a narrow stair, placed between the existing floor beams. By arranging the stair like this, the clients avoided having to invest in structural changes to the building, and the space below the stairway could integrate all of the built-in kitchen cabinetry and appliances.

With the significant construction work concentrated in one part of the apartment, it was possible for the clients to live in their apartment while the work was being done, minimizing costs associated with relocation during construction.
