This brief for this small apartment transformation project demanded an additional bedroom, an improved kitchen, and increased toilet/shower capacity for an urban beekeeping father and his three sons. Because the building would not permit additional window openings, the rooms needed to be shuffled around according to where there was accessible daylight. At the same time that the bathroom and kitchen had to be repositioned around the existing plumbing connections. Due to both a limited budget and ambitious sustainability goals, the client made it a priority to use as much of the existing wall/construction material as possible, and to only use recycled and upcycled furniture.

The resulting plan layout accomodates 4 independent bedrooms, split toilet and shower facilities, and a combined kitchen and living room that can accomodate large gatherings. Both demolition and new construction was minimal, most of the introduced constrcution material was sourced from other building sites, and all the existing doors were re-used. The client designed their own kitchen from what used furniture was available from different classified ads, which fits perfectly with their collection of odd biological artifacts.
